Creating your Yelp Profile
If you don’t own a local business, you should probably stop reading right now. Seriously. This is going to be incredibly boring for you.
But if you do own a local business—specifically if you’re looking for automotive marketing tips or ways to dominate your local market—this is the most important ten-minute read of your week.
I’m Jacob from Wessel Marketing, a Rochester, MN marketing agency that specializes in local small business marketing and automotive marketing.
Recently, I sat down with James from Total Car Care in Preston, MN, to do something most shop owners never take care of: claiming and optimizing a Yelp profile.

Should I pay for Yelp's extra features? (The "Yelp Defense")
Why is a quarterly audit the secret to small business success?
Why does Yelp still matter for SEO in 2026?
You might think Google is the only game in town. While the Google Business Profile is the "gold standard," Yelp is the best friend Google never told you about.
As an automotive marketing agency, we look at the "digital footprint" of a business. In 2026, AI tools don't just read your website. They look for consistency across the web. If your info is right on Google but wrong on Yelp, the AI gets confused--or at least j"udgmental", and it is less likely to recommend or mention your business.
Key benefits of a polished Yelp profile:
Apple Maps Integration: Yelp reviews and photos still power a huge portion of Apple Maps and Siri.
Backlink Authority: Yelp is still considered a high-authority site. Having your link there tells search engines you are a real, established entity.
User Trust: Customers looking for your business will often see Yelp results on the first page of Google. If that profile is empty or has a photo of your shop's bathroom (more on that later), then your competition can show up further up the page.
How do I check if my business already has a Yelp listing?
Often, Yelp creates "default" listings based on public records. To start, go to Yelp and search for your business name and city.
In our demo, we searched for James’ shop in Preston. Even though he’s near Carmona and Forestville, nothing appeared. This is actually good news—it means we get to build the foundation from scratch without cleaning up old, incorrect data.
What information do I need to claim my Yelp profile?
Consistency is across your business listings is crucial, including your website, GBP, Yelp, social profiles, and other listings. To get this right, start with your NAP info: Name, Address, Phone number.
When I helped James, we double-checked his Google Business Profile and his website to ensure the address matched perfectly.
Name: Total Car Care
Phone: 507-322-4057
Address: "21024 212th Street"
This can be a bit more challenging, especially if you have a unique address like Total Car Care. Sometimes, one business listing (like Apple Business Connect), won't like a version of your address. So, you might end up changing how you "spell" your address on all listings to make sure the most important listing accepts it.
Pro-Tip: If your website says "Street" and your Google profile says "St.", pick one and stick to it everywhere. Minor discrepancies can actually hurt your local search ranking.
How do I choose the right categories and description?
Yelp allows you to select up to three categories. For James, "Auto Repair" was the obvious primary choice.
For your description, don't overthink it. One of my favorite small business marketing tips is to repurpose what you already have.
James had great copy on his website: "Honest, reliable service for all your vehicle needs." We copied that over, fixed a few typos, and ensured it highlighted his professional standards and friendly touch.
Should I pay for Yelp's extra features?
No. Right now, we recommend you decline everything Yelp tries to sell you.
The moment you claim your profile, Yelp’s sales team will likely call you. They’ll want your credit card for ads, enhanced profiles, and logo highlights. For most local shops starting out, you don't need this.
Is it valuable in the future? Maybe. But for now, just skip it.
Don't give them your credit card.
Don't feel pressured to "upgrade" to see results.
Do focus on the free basics first: hours, amenities (WiFi, waiting room), and photos, and history, about us, and other free sections.

How do I manage my business photos? (The Bathroom Lesson)
This is the most important part of the video demo. After we set up James’ profile, I went back to audit it.
Yelp, in its "infinite wisdom," had selected a photo of the shop’s bathroom as the featured image. While a clean bathroom is great, it doesn't tell a customer you can fix their transmission.
I had to log back in, delete the bathroom photo, and then delete a generic waiting room photo until Yelp finally defaulted to a high-quality shot of the actual mechanic shop.
The Lesson: Yelp automatically chooses to "best represent" you. If it’s not the one you want, delete it until a better one shows up.
Why is a quarterly audit the secret to small business success?
Marketing isn't a "set it and forget it" task. Best practice is to audit your profiles every quarter for the first year.
Check for:
New Reviews: Are you responding to them?
Photo Engagement: Which photos are people clicking on?
Accuracy: Are your holiday hours updated?
